Better Call GULS!

Holidays got you breaking sad? Here are 3 things to do this break!

*Read to the end to find out the top 5 Law movies/shows you MUST watch*

Idea 1: Catching up on law news

The recent Referendum got you craving some Law News? Staying on top of new cases, proposed legislation and laws can be a fun yet beneficial way to spend your time. For example, were you aware that:

“From 9 November, changes to the Australian Consumer Law will prohibit businesses from proposing, using, or relying on unfair contract terms in standard form contracts with consumers and small businesses”- ACCC

On top of this looking into Global Law can also provide a diverse and interesting perspective; especially within international law. Currently a “Pandemic Treaty” is being negotiated. Multiple sources are reporting that this drafted treaty is failing to comply and/or protect Human Rights. This treaty is being negotiated from the 6th-10th of November and is definitely something to keep an eye on considering the aftermath and relevancy of Covid-19. (HRW, WHO).

Bad Advice from jeremy

Supposedly I am given full creative range for 1 segment per week so I’ve decided to utilize the knowledge I’ve gained over my first year of Law. I must credit the Law School lecturers and many Barristers I have spoken to that stress the importance and realism of these movies. These movies are even commonly referenced in court and take the highest of precedent (for legal reasons this is a joke). Here goes the top 5…

5. The People vs. O. J. Simpson

Following one of the most renowned cases of modern law, The People vs. O. J. Simpson explores the complications of the celebrity murder trial at both a legal and social level. Make sure to check it out on Netflix, if you’re looking for a riveting watch.

4. Suits

Want to watch someone who never graduated law school stumble through the ins and outs of a major firm, all the while trying to woo Meghan Markle? Check out Suits on Netflix, Amazon, or Peacock this holidays.

3. Legally Blonde

Elle Woods is a feisty blonde who will remind you to retain your individuality and spirit, even when faced with the trials and tribulations of law school (and modern dating). Also, did you ever notice that GULS’ favourite colour is pink? Once you see Miss Woods’ outfits, you’ll understand exactly why. You can watch this movie on Netflix, Paramount +, Apple TV, or Amazon Video.

2. The Castle

An Australian classic, we at GULS can testify that at least one of your teachers will be referencing this movie (a lot!).You can stream this movie on Stan;  or buy/rent it from Apple TV, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, YouTube, or Telstra TV.

1. Better Call Saul

A modern classic inspired by another modern classic, Better Call Saul is a series that explores the life of Walter White’s lawyer Saul Goodman from the hit TV show Breaking Bad. Although it is explores characters that have been established in Breaking Bad, you can watch this legal drama without that prior viewing. Although not the most accurate representation of your prospective life as a lawyer in Australia (or at least, we hope), the show will surely get you excited for your Moot Court assessment and provide you with some quality entertainment in the holidays!

You can watch Better Call Saul on Stan or Apple TV.
