Legal Blow for President Snow

*We explore the importance of International Law whilst forefronting the most significant international laws broken throughout “The Hunger Games”*

Hunger games in todays world

In light of the new Hunger Games prequel, we wanted to use this as an opportunity to show why:

International law is the heartbeat that keeps Human Rights alive.

And with all the love this franchise has been given over the years it is important to remember key messages and understand the dystopian warning this series serves as.

So what Laws or Rights were broken in the Hunger Games?

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was the fundamental Human Rights document created in 1948 following WWll. Within this document there are the following key articles:

  1. Article 3 - Right to Life, Liberty, and Security

  2. Article 5 - Freedom from Torture and Degrading Treatment

  3. Article 9 - Freedom from Arbitrary Arrest, Detention, or Exile

  4. Article 25 - Right to Adequate Standard of Living

The treatment of people outside the capital fore fronted these lack of rights by the ruthless peacekeepers and the forceful detainment of innocent civillians. The series has an unjust or in that manor inexistent legal system and lets not forget the staple of the entire storyline:

    The Hunger Games.

The brutality of the games and their cruel and innately disturbing nature portray the importance of fundamental and basic Human Rights. Being able to hold Nations and their respective governments accountable through International Law is the:

Mocking Jay singing our rights into life.

The importance of international law

International Law isn’t directly enforceable into Nation States, however provides a governing framework to key legal rights. It supplies accountability and recommendations to continuously uphold the rights that keep society ticking.

All countries, communities, and people have different values and perspectives on life - but it is of utmost importance to have and implement a set of foundations of the bare minimum requirements.

INternational law news

Unfortunately at the moment there are 2 ever-present wars happening in both Ukraine and Gaza. The consequences of such breaches of law would have been evident to you if you drive a car and/or have to pay for fuel. Economic and trade sanctions are the most commonly used forms of punishment.

Bad Advice from jeremy

I am here to rank the Hunger games films from worst to best. In the correct order.

4. Hunger games 2012.

Is there anything needed to be said, first movie released… it did the job.

3. The Mockingjay Part 1+2

Yes these are seperate movies but they are interchangeable and serve the same purpose. Very good films but just don’t reach the heights of the other 2.

2. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)

Recency bias. I think not. The difficulty alone to create an effective prequel or addition to a movie series years after the fact is a feat many have failed. Yes I’m talking about you “The Mummy”.

1.Hunger Games Catching Fire 2013.

Need I say more? The introduction to integral and the best characters like Finnick Odair. The Quarter Quell games? Successfully escaping the arena? This is locked at 1.
